The story goes that one evening, in 1944, he tested a new drink on two friends from Tahiti, Ham and Carrie Guild. After the first sip, Carrie is said to have exclaimed, "mai tai-roa aé", which in Tahitian means ' out of this world - the best!'. Thus, Bergeron created and named the Mai Tai cocktail.
The Mai Tai
is the iconic tiki drink and has dominated cocktail menus since the 1940s. As rum cocktails go, it's fruity, unabashedly tropical, and packs a heftier wallop than it's carefree cousin, the Daiquiri.
Though it may be synonymous with Hawaiian backdrops and Polynesian flavours, the Mai Tai cocktail is said to have originated at Trader Vic's in Oakland, California in 1944—ground.
